The Mercy Seat
The Mercy Seat ie. "Covering (propitiation)" CHRIST'S BLOOD COVERING OUR SINS.
Here is CHRIST in His mediatorial redemptive work (in Heaven before God). IT WAS SOLID GOLD - 2 1/2 cubits long, 1 1/2 cubits wide.
There was NO SEAT in the Holy of Holies, no need for one; the priestly work was never finished, constantly and daily they brought sacrifices in the Outer Court: NO END OF SERVICE.
Only ONCE (Heb. 10: 11,12) is it mentioned that Christ could SIT DOWN, and only after His work is finished, and nothing to add to His work.
TWO CHERUBIMS - "Guardians"
A sinner (or a believer) is never called on to GUARD THE BLOOD, for he ever stands in need of the blood to protect and guard him.
These cherubins were last seen in Eden (Gen. 3:24) guarding the way to the Tree of Life; at EDEN it was JUDGMENT;
at the ARK it is MERCY, blood makes the difference.
The two are facing but not looking at each other, but toward the Mercy Seat and the Blood; men deny the power of the blood, but the WORD OF GOD COVERS IT, guards it, protects it.
One wing of each angel was stretched forth on high, while the other was folded over the body in token of reverence and humility."
You may ask "In what other manner was God's presence manifested between the cherubim?" Leviticus 16:2.
Cherubim is a translation of the Hebrew word, and is plural in form. The singular form is cherub.
- "Above the mercy seat was the shekinah, the manifestation of the divine presence; and from between the cherubim, God made known His will. Divine messages were sometimes communicated to the high priest by a voice from the cloud. Sometimes a light fell upon the angel at the right, to signify approval or acceptance, or a shadow or cloud rested upon the one at the left to reveal disapproval or rejection."
- "By sin man was shut out from God. Except for the plan of redemption, eternal separation from God, the darkness of unending night, would have been his. Through the Saviour's sacrifice, communion with God is again made possible. We may not in person approach into His presence; in our sin we may not look upon His face; but we can behold Him and commune with Him in Jesus, the Saviour."
- "Communion with God through prayer and the study of His Word must not be neglected, for here is the source of his strength. No work for the church should take precedence of this."
- "Nothing is more needed in our work than the practical results of communion with God. We should show by our daily lives that we have peace and rest in the Saviour. His peace in the heart will shine forth in the countenance. It will give to the voice a persuasive power. Communion with God will ennoble the character and the life. Men will take knowledge of us, as of the first disciples, that we have been with Jesus. This will impart to the worker a power that nothing else can give. Of this power he must not allow himself to be deprived.
- "We must live a twofold life — a life of thought and action, of silent prayer and earnest work. The strength received through communion with God, united with earnest effort in training the mind to thoughtfulness and caretaking, prepares one for daily duties, and keeps the spirit in peace under all circumstances, however trying."
BLOOD - "Blood of bulls and goats"
Were only types and figures, for these could not pay the price of sin: this was only done by the LAMB OF GOD (Heb. 10:1-4:12).
In (Heb. 9:12) Christ sprinkled His blood upon the mercy seat before the throne of God, and forever settled the sin question.
The difference in "Touch Me Not" (Jn. 20:17) and "Handle Me and See" (Lk. 24:39) is sometime during the
Resurrection Day He went to Heaven, fulfilled the TYPE of presenting His blood, and thus could say that night,
before His apostles, "Handle Me and See".
